aku-aku: v.. To move a tall, flat bottomed object (such as a bookshelf) by swiveling it alternatively on its corners in a "walking" fashion. [After the book by Thor Heyerdahl theorising the statues of Easter Island were moved in this fashion.] source: LangMaker.com. Aku Aku also has another meaning to the islanders: a spiritual guide.

These pics are probably going to be too dark ....at the soundcheck for tonight's Not In Our Name benefit concert in Berkeley. A friend of mine got me in, he's associated with the band Fine Arts Militia who are opening the show tonight (headliner is Ani Di Franco). Fine Arts Militia is the new project from Chuck D of Public Enemy.

"Mista Chuck" had quite a bit of influence on the development of my critical thinking skills; he taught me at a young age that while it may be important to get angry, it's more important to get smart. I'm glad to see he's still working hard to make the world a better place.--Dav via Danger Hiptophttp://www.danger-island.com/dav/

National Obsessions

In England it is cricket. In Brazil it is futbal. In the USA it is bringing the tragedy of the commons to new unprecedented levels. In Panama it is accordian players (no kidding). But at Hiptop Nation the national obsession seems to be documenting the exquisite banality of the air travel industry. Here is my installment in the collective series..

p.s. and perhaps the national lame joke should be "I just flew in from ___________ and boy are my thumbs tired!"--Dav via Danger Hiptophttp://www.danger-island.com/dav/

First time I've left the house since Monday. Been stuck in a dark room coding java & oracle like a mad man 20 hours per day to meet a project deadline. Finally got it working an hour ago so I rode out here with my friend Estrella to the best Taco Bell on the planet (It's right on the beach). It's warm (70's?) and sunny. I might have to go get my surfboard and come back....

I don't know if these pics will come out, but there's a building here with a sign that says "warning pumps may start at any time." I'd never noticed the sign before, but just now these big iron portals just opened up and started pouring a huge flood of water out that cascaded through the sand to the beach. Can you imagine if you didn't know about this and were lying in its path?!--Dav via Danger Hiptophttp://www.danger-island.com/dav/

United Press International: Israel to kill in U.S., allied nations

Israel is embarking upon a more aggressive approach to the war on terror that will include staging targeted killings in the United States and other friendly countries, former Israeli intelligence officials told United Press International.

Stop the world, I want to get off. This found via wonkoslice. Wonko writes: "Israel has announced that they will be increasing the aggressiveness of their war against terror by staging targeted killings of suspected terrorists in friendly countries such as the United States. In short, Israel's traveling holy war roadshow may be coming to a city near you. Surprisingly, the US government doesn't seem particularly upset about the fact that a foreign nation will be blatantly murdering people (potentially even US citizens with suspected ties to terrorism) on our own soil. So I guess murder is okay, as long as you're Israel and the people you're killing might be terrorists."

Ah, just brilliant: MC Hawking's Crib.

Yo! This site is your ultimate resource for information about Stephen Hawking the gangsta rapper. While there are dozens of other sites on the web devoted to Stephen Hawking's scientific achievements, I am unaware of a single site (aside from this one) devoted to his career as a lyrical terrorist.

Chronicles Stephen Hawking's amazing underground gangsta rap career, complete with downloadable MP3s, lyrics and photos (such as the above mug shot "from one of the Hawkman's run-ins with the law;" you know better than to step to MC Hawking!

The sun has set, the flamethrowers have come out. A mock scale model of San Francisco was created (pictured is transamerica building, soldiers in front of city hall, the cow palace and Pacbell Park (including the most corporate of corporate art disasters). Then we were treated to a live demonstration of "what it might look like if a monster bike got loose and destroyed san francisco," complete with fire breathing monster bike.
