I pretty much quit watching music videos when MTV quit playing them years ago, but my friend Paul pointed me to this really disturbing new Mogwai video: Hunted By a Freak. I can't remember the last time I was so scarred by an animation!
The company I founded with two friends five years ago is being acquired: Symyx to Acquire [Name deleted] to Further Extend Software Offerings. So ends an exciting, difficult, inspiring and turbulent era of my life. I deleted the company name because I don't want this blog coming up in searches for it.
It's taken me a bit of time and effort, but I am now all set up here in Brazil. I have settled into a small beach town called Garopaba in the southern state of Santa Catarina where I have a 2 BR apartment with wifi Internet, views overlooking the town and the bay and a 15 minute walk to the beach (for about US$200/month inclusive).
I've decided that an ongoing travelogue doesn't fit in well with the posting history I have on this AkuAku.org weblog, and have been wanting to experiment with typepad anyhow, so I have set up a new weblog there specifically for my travel diaries. The first entry is now up, hopefully I can catch up to real time in the next few days. Still struggling with procuring a moblogging solution, but I will be working on that too.
Yesterday was a nice day so I finally completed a project I've been meaning to do for years now. I went down to Warm Water Cove and took a lot of photos of the graffiti there. I also created a Flicker Set from them.
Warm Water Cove is a forgotten city park located where 24th street meets the Bay. It is hidden in a desolate industrial portion of the city, usually empty except for a few people who probably live in one of the many camper vans parked in the area. My brother Marcus introduced me to it years ago at the first of many outdoor punk shows he organized there.
The fences near the park are covered with graffiti, mostly Writer style. Additionally, across a small waterway is a collection of abandoned rusty street cars, also covered in graffiti.
There's 75 of them in the Flicker Set, the last few are wide panoramas made from stitching together sequences of up to 20 shots. There are a few (maybe 10) photos from elsewhere in San Francisco that day too.
Update: I was googling "san francisco" and graffiti and found a photo on Flickr taken by someone else of the artist creating one of the pieces I put in my collection!
