Dance Weekend

I need another weekend to recover!

We went to a great fetish-wear party Friday night (in honor of it being Folsom Street Fair weekend). Saturday was the Love Parade, and Sunday of course was Folsom Street Fair.

Much dancing was involved. We danced in the Mission. We danced down Market Street like a victorious army (ironically melding with the anti-war protest going on at the same place, same time). We danced in Civic Center. We danced in City Hall (w00t! VIP passes!). We danced on Folsom. We danced in leather, we danced in fur. Late Sunday night, we danced at the hippest new restaurant in America, San Francisco's Supper Club, a restaurant/club so decadent one patron asked where the vomitorium might be.

I took photos on Saturday, but the latest Flickr iPhoto Plugin keeps crashing, so I'll have to upload those late and add a link. Oh, I just discovered that there's a photo of Mie and I at the Supper Club site from the pre-opening party in May.

The weather turned out to be perfect, giving me hope that October won't be as unseasonably chilly as September has been. Yay, San Francisco.

Unfortunately all the festivities destroyed any chance of getting around to responding to the dozens of nice responses we've been getting since sending out our 'we got married' announcement last week. Hopefully I can start on that tomorrow.

I sure am busy.

I'm way behind on my journaling here, so here's a shotgun blast of Dav-itude. Quick summary:

  • I spent a month travelling on the East Coast from Montreal to Atlanta discussing business opportunities, visiting friends and attending my 20 year high school reunion.
  • An unusually large number of friends are looking to start new software based companies and I've been considering joining their ventures.
  • I've also even looked at joining a few existing startups.
  • And of course I've got a half dozen of my own ideas for new software ventures that I'm still working on.
  • Burning Man is less than a week away, and I feel two weeks away from being prepared.
  • I finished my sailing lessons and have already started bareboat chartering as a certified skipper! Aye, Aye!
  • My luck finally ran out for FOO Camp this year, luckily BAR Camp stepped in to fill the void in my heart.

Dancing ain't illegal yet. On the off chance you're reading this before 5:30 PM PST January 23 2004 and live in the Bay Area, get your freak revved up and meet up at the last Richmond-bound BART car leaving 16th Street Station at the aforementioned time. I've gotta figure out a way to rig up my guerilla disco ball....

More details at Party Car Tribe.

Immediately followed by Dodge Ball.

creative commons one year anniversary

Last night Mie and I went to the Creative Commons One Year Anniversary celebration down at 111 Minna. It was a well organized fete full of the passionate and intellectual "Cult of Lessig" types that one usually finds at CC parties (and the catering was top notch!). Unfortunately, we were both completely drained of mental and physical energy from Saturday night's bacchinalian Santarchy festivities, so we didn't stay for long as were were unable to hold up our end of an intelligent conversation. I think I'll quit drinking alcohol for awhile.

In a brief doomed attempt at one such conversation, Justin introduced us to his illustrated mobile poetry that he's been creating on his Treo 600. Which apparently he hasn't released under a CC license, hmm.

It was a good night for Creative Commons though; lots of positive things happening. You can get a good summary by watching the latest flash animation (warning: 7MB download).

goa gil report

I had a great time at the weekend trance party, although there were some serious problems with the entertainment organization. The party officially started on Saturday, but Toni and I drove up Friday evening to get a good camping spot for our tribe. It was nice to get there early before the music started and spend a night actually camping in quiet dark woods, because usually I only go camping during these parties and the music is going all night. The only other people there on Friday night and Saturday morning were the event organizers. They were all down in the meadow setting up the DJ stage and the decorations. We camped up on a ridge above the meadow so were were all by ourselves. Saturday morning we took walks through the woods which were beautiful at this time of year. Everything was a bright green with yellowish tints.

The organizers had told us not to start a campfire, however on Saturday morning we met a man named Singer who lived up on the ridge, down a small footpath from our campsite. He told us that he would actually like us to keep a campfire burning because he wants to burn away as much dry wood as possible before the fire season starts. Singer was a very interesting and wise man, he shared many stories about the things he learned from living up in the forest for twenty years. He was no Ted Kaczynski though, as he had a firm grasp on physics, biology and how to use technology to enable man to live more in harmony with nature.

It was nice to have the campfire on Saturday night because the people bringing the sound system didn't show up on time. The music was supposed to start around 5PM but by nightfall there was still no music. By this time the meadow below was full of the tents of new arrivals and our friends had shown up at our camp. Many people had gotten lost because the directions had been wrong. To get the directions to the party you had to call a certain number at a certain time and listen to a voice mail message. The guy who left the message had mistakenly swapped the driving distances on two of the roads involved. The place is very hard to get to; it's way up in the mountain along difficult, narrow and often unmarked roads. I hadn't gotten lost because I had actually been to this place last October for another Goa Gil party so I just needed to be reminded of some road names and ignored the distances. It got quite cold down in the meadow at night since there were no lights, no fires and no music to dance to. But up on the ridge it was a little warmer plus we had a fire going.

We assumed the sound system people were lost too. By midnight there was still no music. By 3AM there was still no music. At 5AM, just after the sun came up, the music started. Apparently what happened was the original sound system had truck problems so they never made it. Sometime during the night someone from the party actually left, drove back to San Francisco (at least a 3.5 hour drive) and came back with another sound system. I hear many people got angry with the event organizers down in the meadow, especially the Russian and Israeli groups (they're always at these events) who made a big ruckus and left. Our night wasn't so bad sitting around the fire chatting amongst friends and meeting new people who noticed our fire up in the woods and climbed up to join us.

But it was wonderful when the music started at daybreak on Sunday. Most of my tribe decided to stay an extra night, hoping that they'd keep the music going through Sunday night to make up for missing Saturday night, but they shut it down at dusk. It was an atypical trance party since the nights were all quiet, but I still had a great time and I'm looking forward to the next one.

I'm off for the weekend to the Goa Gil camping trance party, once again located in a secret wooded location in northern California. It's too bad the lunar eclipse was last night, because tonight I'll be out dancing where one can really see the sky!
