In July of 2003 Mie and I took two days off of work to visit Niijima, (New Island) an island off the south east coast of Japan that is the best known Japanese surfing spot. We went during the off season so it was mostly empty of tourists, and, perhaps not coincidentally, devoid of waves.

My digital camera had died earlier in the trip, so I didn't get many photos taken this time. All of these were taken with Mie's regular film camera. I lament not taking more photos now, because some of my favorite mental images from the trip were not recorded, such as the outdoor bath constructed beneath fake roman ruins, and the nearby island that jutted out of the water on the shore line straight up into the air for 100 meters that we climbed up on. Or the mamasan's Inn that we stayed at. Oh well.

You can see more photos and even some videos at Tokyo Tidbits (Mie's blog) here, here and here.
