They must have taken a long time to find the one guy who took the U.S. side in this street poll...
Japan Today - What do you think about crimes committed by U.S. military personnel?
"There are so many American military guys all around Tokyo, especially in Shibuya and Roppongi. Whenever I hear about so many reports of them committing crimes, I tend to worry that one day something bad might happen to me as well. I would like to ask them to obey the law. I used to have a nice image of America but these kinds of incidents ruin it."
-Yuki Chugun, 15.
I think the fact that few of those quoted bothered to distinguish between the criminal G.I.'s and the U.S. presence in general tells the story. What are we still doing there anyhow? What's our problem?
I guess I should disclose that I lived in Okinawa for a year when I was 9-10 because my father was in the U.S. Marine Corps stationed there. We lived in town, not on base, so all of my neighbors were Okinawan, and I personally enjoyed living there very much.
