I have been thinking along the same lines. I recently found a site which has 1000s of locations within many countries already named along with the ICBM coordinates in CSV format and guess who made it? A branch of the US military! You can download it but unfortunately I can't find it right now!! It may be linked to from here:

The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), developed by the USGS in cooperation with the U.S. Board on Geographic Names (BGN), contains information about almost 2 million physical and cultural geographic features in the United States.
